A historical name for a living area

This guide uses Pays d’Antrain for the rural area around Antrain, Bazouges-la-Pérouse, Rimou, Marcillé-Raoul, Tremblay and their neighbours. It helps make sense of older addresses and of this domain’s history. For current planning, also search for Val-Couesnon and Couesnon Marches de Bretagne. Antrain, La Fontenelle, Saint-Ouen-la-Rouërie and Tremblay are now parts of Val-Couesnon.

Three useful starting points

Bazouges-la-Pérouse

Choose Bazouges for an old centre explored on foot, public art and a short onward journey to Villecartier Forest. Allow time for the slopes and granite streets instead of treating the town as a photo stop. The Brittany Tourism introduction is in French but provides an official place reference.

Antrain and Val-Couesnon

Antrain works well for a walk by the Couesnon and as a stop on La Régalante cycle route. A booking, sign or bus search may alternate between Antrain and Val-Couesnon, so retain both names when checking an address.

Villecartier and the villages

Give the forest its own half-day. Smaller villages such as Rimou, Tremblay and Marcillé-Raoul are best used as purposeful stops attached to a walk, meal or route already being travelled. Check access before expecting the inside of any heritage building to be open.

A first visit without rushing

For one day, combine Bazouges and Villecartier. With one night, add Antrain or one village heritage loop. With two nights, reserve a day for walking or cycling and keep a short wet-weather alternative.
