Martigné and La Ballue walks from Bazouges
These walks start in central Bazouges-la-Pérouse but produce different days: Martigné joins town and small heritage, while La Ballue reaches farther into the valley and estate landscape.

Both official route sheets name Place de l’Hôtel de Ville and publish these GPS coordinates. Still download the current map for the particular loop you choose.
Two names for two separate circuits
The Martigné Loop and the La Ballue Circuit share one useful fact: their official route sheets place the start at Place de l’Hôtel de Ville in Bazouges-la-Pérouse. They are not short and long variants of one route, however, and they should not be treated as two halves of a single walk.
Martigné is the shorter outing, joining the town, Bellevue park, the historic gateway that gives the loop its name and a return through old streets. La Ballue reaches farther into the countryside, towards the Jumelière valley and the surroundings of the château and gardens. Choose one first, then download its own map; switching casually between two sets of directions is an easy way to miss a turn.

The small rounding difference for La Ballue is a reminder to use the current downloadable material as the navigation authority. A stated duration is only a planning estimate: stops, mud, heritage details and the group’s pace determine the real day.
The Martigné Loop: town, park and gateway
The tourist office’s English Martigné Loop page describes a route through Bazouges-la-Pérouse and Bellevue park. Its official material identifies a view towards Saint-Rémy-du-Plain and Marcillé-Raoul, the surviving gateway of Martigné, and the return to the historic centre by Rue du Châtelet.
Those points explain the outing but do not replace the route line. The gateway is not the start, and entering “Martigné” alone into a navigation app will not reproduce the official circuit. Begin at the square given on the sheet, follow its waymarking and use the heritage stops as successive confirmations.
This loop suits a day with limited walking time or a plan that combines country paths with the centre of Bazouges. The published sheet nevertheless shows a substantial share of earth or stone tracks. After rain, a modest distance can demand proper footwear and longer than an urban stroll.
The La Ballue Circuit: walking towards the estate
The tourist office’s English La Ballue Circuit page also starts from Bazouges. Official descriptions place the walk in the rolling landscape and Jumelière valley before it approaches the Château de La Ballue area. Brittany Tourism has a separate detailed official listing with downloadable material.
The public walking circuit and admission to the gardens are separate decisions. Passing the estate does not include entry to the privately operated, seasonal and ticketed gardens. To go inside, check the official La Ballue website and add the visit beyond the walking estimate. Otherwise, remain on the public circuit shown by its map and respect property boundaries.
This longer route deserves a deliberate start: water, food, protection for the weather and an offline map. A GPX line is a navigation aid, not permission to continue when an official diversion, barrier or sign on the ground says otherwise.
One trailhead does not mean one navigation file
Both route sheets name Place de l’Hôtel de Ville, 35560 Bazouges-la-Pérouse, with the coordinates 48.427386, -1.574955. The Google Maps and OpenStreetMap buttons on this page help you reach that start; they do not reproduce either walking circuit.
Before leaving the square:
- open the map for the selected loop and identify its first segment;
- understand the waymarking key illustrated on that sheet;
- keep the PDF offline even when using a GPX track;
- do not follow another marker merely because it initially points the same way;
- return to the last certain point if the map, track and terrain stop agreeing.
The tourist office’s downloadable documents page is the best fallback if an old bookmark or direct file link changes. Find the named route there and download the version currently offered.
Surfaces, weather and shared countryside
The route sheets show significant portions on earth or stone tracks. Rain, maintenance and agricultural use can change their comfort. In wet conditions, wear shoes with reliable grip and turn back if a section exceeds the group’s ability.
These circuits cross a lived and worked landscape. Close a gate when instructed, control dogs as signs require, pass livestock without disturbance and keep access to homes and farms clear. On shared road sections, choose the side that provides safe visibility and make yourself visible to drivers.
A downloaded trace may not contain an incident or closure announced that morning. Temporary signs, municipal instructions and barriers on site always take priority.
Build a coherent day
After Martigné, leave time for the streets of Bazouges and the art and heritage walk. The subjects overlap enough to make a complete day without another drive.
For La Ballue, choose between the public walk on its own and a walk combined with an actual garden visit. If you want the latter, confirm opening and admission before setting out. Avoid automatically adding another long attraction; a quiet stop in Bazouges is a credible finish to the circuit.

- check for local alerts, diversions or closures;
- carry suitable water, food, layers and offline navigation;
- distinguish the public route from admission to private property;
