Geocaching at Villecartier: check before you search

The answer you need before setting out

Villecartier did have an official tourism-led geocaching trail. Couesnon Marches de Bretagne Tourist Office publications call it “Aux Arbres et caetera…” and also record a town trail named “Bazouges-la-Pérouse, Petite Cité de Caractère.” A more recent public notice says the wider Trésors de Haute-Bretagne programme was placed on pause: its trails have been inaccessible and new registrations suspended since 17 March 2025.

Do not navigate with an old screenshot, a copied puzzle or final coordinates preserved on a blog. The historical trail name is not evidence that its instructions still work or that a physical container is being maintained. When this guide was updated, the local official page did not announce that the Villecartier trail had reopened.

That does not rule out all geocaching in the area. Independent cache owners can publish, maintain or archive listings on an active platform. It does change the planning method: select a listing that is visibly active on the day, rather than treating the former tourism trail as a standing attraction.

Select a cache from live information

Open the official Geocaching map, create an account if needed, and centre the search on Bazouges-la-Pérouse or Villecartier Forest. This guide deliberately promises no individual cache. Publication, maintenance and archive status may change between our update and your visit.

Before choosing a listing, check four things:

1. it is marked active, not disabled or archived;
2. its description and attributes suit the least experienced person in the group;
3. recent logs do not show repeated unsuccessful searches or an unresolved maintenance problem;
4. any parking and access directions remain compatible with current land-manager notices.

Choose another listing if one of those checks fails. A box encountered in the forest without a live cache page is not permission to move it, open it or claim a find.

Treat Récrénature as a landmark, not a fictional trailhead

The Récrénature leisure base at Le Moulin de la Forêt is a useful landmark for the lake and the main visitor area. The departmental tourism listing publishes its address and location. The map point above helps you reach the area; it does not claim to be the start of a currently active geocaching trail.

A current cache listing may identify different parking. Use it only where signs permit parking and where the vehicle will not obstruct a forestry road or emergency access. Do not try to park beside final coordinates simply because an app draws a straight line towards them.

Save the useful information before entering the woods. Mobile reception may be uneven. Geocaching’s help centre explains offline lists and maps, although some options depend on account level. Keep a general forest map too: a GPS point does not show you the safest route back.

Read the forest before the screen

Villecartier is managed state forest. Forestry work, hunting arrangements, wildfire risk, strong wind and storm damage can all change access. Check the current Office national des forêts page and local notices shortly before the outing. A barrier or closure on the ground always takes precedence over an icon in an app.

Stay on permitted paths until an active listing gives a clearly authorised approach. Do not dig, strip moss, lift stones from a monument or climb a tree “just to check.” A properly published cache should be searchable without damaging its setting.

With children, agree a search boundary and a time limit before starting. One adult should retain the wider navigation while another supervises the close search. Walk away if the point leads towards a slippery bank, a steep drop or active forestry work. Finding a container never matters more than bringing the group back safely.

Pack for a search, not just a stroll

Bring a charged phone, power bank, water, suitable footwear and a pen. Save the listing and any additional waypoints. Read its terrain information rather than judging access solely by the distance from the car park.

If you find an active cache, sign the log as its page directs, replace the container exactly where it was and avoid posting a photograph that reveals the hiding place. Report damage or a likely absence honestly through the platform. Do not install an improvised replacement without the cache owner’s agreement.

A verified alternative that is not geocaching

If no suitable active cache appears, the Tourist Office offers a different treasure hunt: “Sur les pas du seigneur de Bazouges”—“In the footsteps of the Lord of Bazouges.” It begins at the Tourist Office, 2 place de l’Hôtel de Ville, and uses a bag of objects and puzzles around the historic town. It is not geocaching and follows its own visitor arrangements. Check the official page and contact the office before travelling to confirm availability and any reservation requirement.

To stay at Villecartier, the “À vous de jouer” games library also presents a woodland-animal investigation using a paper map and booklet. This is not a GPS cache either. Ask the games library at Le Moulin de la Forêt for the material and check its calendar before travelling, because the activity depends on the visitor service available that day.

For a second no-guesswork option, use the current Small Monuments Trail sheet. You retain the pleasures of observation and finding clues, but follow a published woodland circuit instead of assuming that an old cache remains.
